Breakout - Shift

Hi internet strangers!

My name is Davy and I've been dabbling in game development for a while now. I usually tackle huge passion projects that never see the light of day because... well, usually life (or the lack of skill, as much as I hate to admit it) happens and they get put on the sideburner... and then they get put in the freezer and never quite leave it.

So I decided that I would turn over a new leaf with my game creating hobby. No more huge RPGs with epic storylines or whatever amazing combat systems I've devised based on whichever game I most recently fell in love with. No... I'd start making smaller games. Put them out there. Hone my skills. And maybe... just maaaaybe one day I'll have the time and skills to actually finish one of my more ambitious passion projects. So I made up a brand name and got to work.

I don't just want to completely copy the classics or make simple games everyone has seen a dozen times over. I at least want to add a little quirk that would make the game a bit more interesting, and keep me motivated. This game is the first of one such attempt. Breakout games, brick breakers, Arkanoid clones or whatever you want to call them are usually fairly simple games to make, so this seemed like a good place to start. To make the game a bit more interesting, I decided to give the player an extra challenge by switching up the sides of the level you're supposed to guard with your paddle. To give you a smidge of control over when that happens, it's triggered by breaking certain blocks, which I dubbed Shift-blocks. If you're good at aiming, you can more or less wait for the opportune moment to break them. Some of you are probably a lot better than I am at this, so I'm curious what high scores I'll see after some people have started playing...

In any case, I've already started working on the next project. But for now, enjoy this one, and let me know what you think!
