Nightmare
A downloadable game for Windows
You can't sleep. You feel like you're being watched. No matter what your parents say, the monster under your bed is real! Should you make a run for it? A sudden movement startles you. You jump out of bed and open your bedroom door. What you find is not the familiar corridor. You're outside and it's pitch black. Only your heartbeat can light the path, but only for a moment. Can you escape the monster and end this nightmare?
Nightmare is an endless platformer under development. It's based upon an idea I once developed for the Global Game Jam many years ago. Now determined to finally make a full game out of an idea I really liked, I present a first playable version of Nightmare!

Sadly I am in Mac and I can not play the game but I am seeing the gameplay videos and it looks very nice. I like the story and I can relate to the character :)
This is gonna be a bit of a deep critique review for you.
The idea is fun and the aesthetic definitely knows what it's trying to be and has a lot of potential.
The camera feels a bit low as if the player is perfectly centered in the camera which at times feels off.
There's no way to see your score while playing or even see highscores right now anytime after. So the only time and the last time I see a score is on the death screen. Which makes me want to play less because that mentality of "I'll beat my score this time!" just doesn't exist. And seeing a score while playing is super important. If I can't see my score I'm really not given a reminder of what I'm trying to accomplish or how close I am to it. Seeing a score and highscore often makes the gameplay a bit more intense. Being a few points below your highest score is always nervewracking and fun.
The parallax background sometimes makes the platforms look jittery which can be a little jarring. I can also at times jump above the background which is definitely strange looking.
The collision boxes sometimes have the player a little in the air which looks off.
The platforming feels a little floaty and really tuned for the game; which makes things feel strange sometimes personally.
Adding keyboard/controller interface controls also would be a nice touch so I don't have to reach over to my mouse to start the game and restart it.
There's potential for the game but it definitely could benefit from some work.
Thanks for the feedback, this is very useful to me!
Life has gotten a bit busy though right now, but I'll take a look at it when things calm down.
Funny little runner with a great concept, but i feel like it needs a little more to it, the idea of a spooky runner is definitely interesting but maybe adding more obstacles and/or enemies after a set amount of score would help it feel fresh even after a few minutes of playing.
Thanks for the feedback!
I'm definitely still working on some more obstacles. Right now the level generation is completely random, but I also felt something was missing. Your suggestion to make more difficult obstacles appear after a certain score is also one of the solutions I'm toying with. I still have a ways to go, but I hope I can turn it into a fun game in the end :)
[EDIT:] I forgot to reply to some of your "questions" in the video. First, you've played a very early build, the most recent one already has a lot more variation in the levels. And yes, the heartbeat is just there to light the environment for you. The closer the enemy is, the faster it beats and the more you see. But it also means the monster can grab you if you make a mistake... I hope it creates interesting gameplay where you decide to wait for another heartbeat, or just jump in the dark.
